Windows are an important part of your home’s day-to-day function. Most windows last 15 to 20 years before needing replacement. Unfortunately, this can be a costly project when the time comes around, beginning at around $400 per window and potentially increasing into the thousands.

To help you keep costs low, we at the MarketWatch Guides Team have researched the best and cheapest window replacement companies. We reviewed dozens of top window brands and averaged their costs to find the lowest options. We also analyzed warranties to gauge the quality and ensure you’re making a lasting investment. Among our top picks are Champion, Anderson and Castle.

Choosing replacement windows involves weighing numerous options, including window types, glass options, hardware components and window frame materials.

There are various window types that may or may not fit your personal aesthetic and functionality requirements. The first step to finding the right window provider is to ensure they carry the best product to fit your needs and budget. Here is a rundown of common window types and their average pricing.*

*Cost figures are averaged from multiple 2022 reports, such as The Home Depot.

We recommend reading customer reviews for each window installer you’re considering on popular sites such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Google. This will give you insight into previous customers’ experiences. Take note of both positive and negative trends, especially regarding the product and installation quality.

Try to find some reviews that mention the provider’s quote process. Take note of whether the reviews mention any discounts or deals. Also, ensure the company stands by its quote and doesn’t add surprise fees during or after installation.

Check that any window company you’re considering includes a warranty to protect your investment. The coverage level varies by product. High-end options, such as wood windows, typically include more comprehensive warranties. Less expensive options, such as vinyl windows, have shorter warranties of one to two years. Window warranties are typically separated into two warranties: one for workmanship and one for components.

Lifetime warranties aren’t standard in the windows industry. If a window company includes a lifetime warranty, this signifies a quality and secure investment.

Here are our top picks for the most affordable window brands:

“5-star experience with Castle Windows this year. Following a lot of back and forth on the design, with ample help from [the rep] and his install team, my wife and I finally landed on a front door we were 100% committed to. Castle gave us frequent updates when the door was ready and scheduling the install was a breeze. Major kudos to the install team who were prompt, courteous, and most importantly did an amazing job. I was first referred to Castle for their high quality and workmanship and they totally came through to deliver exactly that for our home.” —MW P. via BBB

“Window installation was easy and the installers were professional. It started pouring rain during the installation, but they finished. They came back the following afternoon to finish the caulking. Windows look great and I simply love my storm door.” —Mary N. via BBB

“They do not service repairs on two large bay windows and one single window installed on the same day. All three needed repairs. After six months of sending emails, pictures, more emails and pictures, they ordered the repairs in November, 2021. On August, 2022, the wrong window repair parts arrived. It’s now February, 2023, and I was just told the repair parts were ordered in December, 2022. Do not order their windows if you expect them to stand by [their] warranty. Especially since the interiors of the panes fill with condensation and you are unable to see through them for years.” —Scott Yanke via BBB

Castle is promoting a $75 trade-in on windows and $150 trade-in on doors. When we reached out to the company, it said financing is available to discuss with a representative at the time of the estimate.

“We had our house sided and new doors and windows installed in the fall of 2020. Our windows are Harvey windows (also had them in our previous house), and we love them! Quality windows, well made and reasonably priced. We recently had a couple of the windows that had become filmy and lost the gas between the panes. We contacted the company who did our installation, and they contacted Harvey right away. Within a week or so, I was contacted by the technician at Harvey and they scheduled a time to come out and replace the 2 windows for us. Took less than 10 minutes and the technician was awesome! Can’t say enough good things about the company. Thank you Harvey!” —Janet Collings via Google Reviews

“I had an issue with 2 of my windows and when I called to explain this morning, I was met with the most helpful and efficient customer service by Rebecca. She thoroughly explained to me what I’d need to send in to create my claim and she even sent an email detailing it out while we were on the phone. She stayed on the line with me to walk me through where to locate product ID numbers on my windows, and explained what I could expect as next steps following the call.

Within a couple of hours, she had my claim number processed and sent through to me and my window replacement is already underway. I could not be happier with the service provided by Harvey today!” —Deanna Fay via Google Reviews

“I had Harvey Windows and Doors professionally installed in 2020 and I regret the decision every cold day. Harvey vinyl windows sweat and freeze solid in cold temps. Some condensation is expected and acceptable in cold weather, but what happens to these windows is not normal or acceptable. For the record, our house is not humid (35% or lower) and other non Harvey Windows in this home do not do this. Buyer beware!” —Edward Mortell via Google Reviews

Harvey doesn’t currently list any financing options or discounts on their website. However, your local Harvey window distributor, contractor or installer may offer their own financial incentives.

“We are delighted with our replacement Pella windows! We opted for the Architect series wood windows; the Provincial (brown) stain matches our 1931 window trim beautifully. Over the past 15 years, in three stages, we replaced all the windows in our house with Pella Architect. Dave, the Pella sales rep, came to our house to measure and provide a written quote. He is very knowledgeable and a super nice guy. Demand for windows is high during the Covid 19 pandemic, and I had to reach out to him three times before he came out. It was worth the wait. Tim was the team leader on our installation. He and his co-worker wore masks most of the time they were inside and were very professional, explaining the process, demonstrating the tilt-in feature, cleaning up after themselves, and getting the six windows installed in one day. I was surprised to discover they had planted a Pella sign in front of my house. I also found some sharp, rusty screws from our old storm windows laying in the driveway. Glad they didn’t puncture my tire. We are very happy with the new Pella windows!” —Arlene A. via BBB

“Pella advertises a lifetime warranty, but getting customer service on my Pella Windows recently was nearly impossible. After a February 2021 request to repair or replace a malfunctioning window, the first appointment was more than two months later. That attempt failed, and the technician forced the window closed, but it would not fully close, leaving a cold draft. Parts were ‘unavailable’ and then ‘backordered’ for months. Meanwhile I received two invoices for the service in April 2021. Those invoices eventually were canceled, but the parts did not arrive until December 2021, and an appointment was scheduled for January. Because of a death in the family, I had to reschedule, which they were unable to do until March 17, 2022! Only after I sent a letter of complaint February 19 to the president of Gunton Corporation did they find a cancellation and finally repair the window on March 4, 2022. It is still stiff, but it works, which is why I give them two stars instead of one.” —William J. via BBB

“Don’t know how they have a A+ rating. They installed windows that are seemingly the wrong size. Used quarter round molding to cover up their flaws so much so that I am unable to hang blinds in the windows. After months of waiting anxiously for new windows we finally got notice that they were going to install them. When they installed them they left pieces of metal all over the ground for my young children and dogs to cut themselves and to step on and replaced the windows with clunky moldings that caused the inability to hang blinds in the frame as you could with any other window. They […] suggested they could fix the molding that they messed up by charging us labor and materials to fix their mistake. How do you charge someone more to fix something that you messed up?” —Paul S. via BBB

“Speaking as a designer — I want to personally thank [my Marvin rep] for such amazing service in providing information, drawings and feedback on the Modern multi-slide door series. She was quick in her response time and informative. Hoping she is appreciated by her employer!” —Ashley D. via BBB

“We’ve had trouble with our doors out of adjustment and hinges not made well. I wouldn’t buy again.” —Greg M. via BBB

“We just had 8 bedroom windows and a picture window installed, finish on the wood inside is horrendous, very rough, raised grain, and some closures are malfunctioning. Inspect your windows completely before install. Wish we had sent back. We assume they will step up and handle situation, but after reading these reviews it saddens me. If and when they fix I will change review.. They need a new quality control inspector or just need to have one. Put the coffee cups down and work on it.” —Rick H. via BBB

With the average window replacement cost ranging from around $400 to thousands of dollars, it’s important to understand what makes some jobs more expensive than others. Here are several common factors that impact window replacement cost:

Windows can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood or vinyl, giving each window unique properties and energy performance. Wood is a pricier option that is durable and looks timeless, while vinyl offers low cost and maintenance.

When replacing windows, consider the size of the glass and the number of windows. Choosing smaller or standard-sized options can save money, while costlier customized windows are more energy-efficient options. Check with the window manufacturer and installation contractor for promotions or financing options to help reduce the cost.

Whether you’re looking for a skylight, casement window or something else, the type of window will influence the price you pay since different windows have different sizes, features, materials and construction costs.

If you want windows that keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, you’ll pay extra. These premium features include inert gasses like argon or krypton with insulating properties and a low-e coating that prevents overheating inside your home.

Replacing windows can cost anywhere from $467 to $1,333 depending on the size and type of window, get a quote from a top provider.

Vinyl windows are the cheapest to replace, averaging between $330-$575 per window.

Casement windows generally cost between $527 to $1,200 to replace, get a quote from a top provider.

If you’re looking to replace your windows, there are several options available to you that can help lower your costs.

Cost is only one part of finding the best window replacement company for you. Product selection, customization options, energy efficiency and other vital factors will also help to narrow down your choices.

Homeowners looking for white-glove installation at a reasonable price should consider Anderson, which offers industry-leading services for your window replacement project. Single-pane and single-hung windows are typically the least expensive replacement windows. This is especially true for vinyl and fiberglass options.

Some go-to ways to save money when replacing windows include sticking with standard, natural colors such as white and using standard sizes when possible. You can also score lower prices by opting for sliding products instead of hinged. Finally, you can save money on energy bills by opting for energy-efficient windows with insulating argon gas and Low-E coatings.

Replacing as many windows as you can at once is generally less expensive than replacing multiple windows over time.
