Right along the Harrison Street Green Belt a stately 1910 home hides behind the trees. It's full of sweet details like casement windows and the original fireplace. But the real standout is a little bit newer: A backyard oasis featuring a collection of decks and boardwalks above lush landscaping.

The interior has been well-maintained, and it hasn’t had the period charm knocked out of it, either. Through a wood plank front door, the living room has cove ceilings and the original brick fireplace (painted white, but nothing that can’t be restored if you want to bring back the brick tones) bookended by stained glass. The main story has a circular floor plan, with the dining room and kitchen looping back around to the living room on the other side.

The stairs to the second floor lead straight to a set of vintage French doors to a sunny lounge or office space. There are two more bedrooms up here, including a smaller one with a wall of built-in shelves, and a large bathroom with built-in cabinets. The finished basement has another pair of bedrooms and another full bath.

The main gateway to the backyard is just off the kitchen through a tiny, tidy mudroom with a cute little peaked roof. It's a small detail, but it helps set the stage for the landscaping below.

Stairs lead down from the house to the main deck, made out of ipe—one of the hardest, densest woods. Raised boardwalks spin off of this like a central hub, carving out additional backyard spaces. These wood paths zig-zag over and around a lily pond, leading to other plantings and gathering spaces.

One secluded corner of the backyard is a gravel patio gathered around a fire pit. On the other side, a cedar soaking tub rises up just past the edge of the pond, surrounded by two levels of deck—one perfect for just dangling your legs in.

The densely wooded grounds keep this quiet space mostly secluded, save a couple of parts that skirt close to the next door neighbor. Of course, if you ever get the hankering to get a little more exposed, the notorious nude beach at Denny-Blaine Park is just a couple of blocks away.
